Seven Texas Aggie Medal of Honor Recipients

Sgt. George Dennis Keathley was one of the seven men who had attended or graduated from Texas A&M University and who received the Medal of Honor in World War II. Every new Texas A&M cadet must learn their names. They are honored in the Sam Houston Sanders Corps of Cadets Center and the Memorial Student Center at Texas A&M University, College Station, Brazos County, Texas, USA.

The seven Texas Aggie Medal of Honor recipients are Hughes, Fowler, Keathley, Carswell, Leonard, Whiteley and Harrell.

George Dennis Keathley was the son of William Finis Keathley and Bertha Mary Leberman.

Born on 10 Nov 1907 in Olney, Young County, Texas, USA.

Attended Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (later Texas A&M University) for 3 semesters, 1933-35 and summer school in 1936, 1939 and 1940.

Joined the U.S. Army.

Earned the Medal of Honor for his actions on Monte Altuzzo, Italy on 14 Sep 1944.

Killed in action on Monte Altuzzo, Italy on 14 Sep 1944.

Posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on 27 Mar 1945.

The Medal of Honor was presented to his wife by Major General Bruce Magruder on 11 Apr 1945 at Camp Walters, Texas, USA.

 

Buried in American Battlefield Monument Commission Cemetery at Florence, Italy. Inscription on grave marker:

Honored on 1 Mar 1969 with the renaming of a Texas A&M University dormitory to George D. Keathley Hall.  Keathley's family outside of George D. Keathley Hall.

 


SGT. GEORGE D. KEATHLEY '37
Honored on 27 Feb 1993 with the unveiling of a bas relief bronze plaque in the Corps of Cadets Center at Texas A&M University, in College Station, Brazos County, Texas, USA.

 

George Dennis Keathley's Medal of Honor is on loan to the Corps of Cadets Center at Texas A&M University and is currently on display there.
