Seven Texas Aggie Medal of Honor Recipients

Maj. Horace Seaver Carswell, Jr. was one of the seven men who had attended or graduated from Texas A&M University and who received the Medal of Honor in World War II. Every new Texas A&M cadet must learn their names. They are honored in the Sam Houston Sanders Corps of Cadets Center and the Memorial Student Center at Texas A&M University, College Station, Brazos County, Texas, USA.

The seven Texas Aggie Medal of Honor recipients are Hughes, Fowler, Keathley, Carswell, Leonard, Whiteley and Harrell.

Horace Seaver Carswell, Jr. was the son of Horace Seaver Carswell, Sr. and Bertha A. Rea.

Born on 18 Jul 1916 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, USA.

Attended Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (later Texas A&M University) for two semesters (1934-1935). Graduated from Texas Christian University in 1939.

Joined the U.S. Army Air Forces.

Earned the Medal of Honor for his actions over the South China Sea on 26 October 1944.

Killed in action in China on 26 Oct 1944. He was initially buried at the Catholic mission in Tungchen, China.

Posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Air Medal, and the Purple Heart. These medals were presented to his wife on 20 Dec 1944 and 21 Jul 1945 at Goodfellow Air Force Base, San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas, USA.

Posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on February 4, 1946.

Fort Worth Army Air Field was renamed Carswell Air Force Base on February 27, 1948.

Honored on 27 Feb 1993 with the unveiling of a bas relief bronze plaque in the Corps of Cadets Center at Texas A&M University, in College Station, Brazos County, Texas, USA.
