A
Del Mar College "Wall of Honor" will be unveiled at the college during a special
ceremony Saturday at 7:15 p.m., reports Gene B. Davis, chairman of a special
recognition subcommittee of the Del Mar College Former Students Association.
"The college has had a form of recognition since its inception with the Hall
of Fame to honor outstanding students during their studies at the college,"
Davis said.
"Now in recognition of the college's 60th anniversary, the former students
are initiating a permanent way to recognize former students who have
distinguished themselves since leaving the college," Davis explained.
Six persons, whose names will not be announced until the evening of the
presentation, will be honored. They will include a Congressional Medal of Honor
recipient, a State Supreme Court justice, a U.S. congressman, a former church
chancellor and a retired college administrator.
The six will be honored for having achieved fame in civic/community service,
education, fine arts, government, law, military and religion. The six are being
singled out for their innovations, leadership and contributions on a community,
state or national level.
The ceremony will be in the Retama Room on the second floor at Harvin Center.
Esenjay Petroleum Corp. and H.E.B. Foods are corporate sponsors of the project.
Davis said the Wall of Honor will be perpetual, with recipients to be added
each year. Awards will be given in 16 categories, including business,
communications, development, engineering, finance, health sciences, science,
sports and technology.
