Cook-Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery Transcription Project

I am documenting the Cook-Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery in north Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA. Why?  Because no one else had tackled it before. I started in January of 2009 and so far, I have photographed the grayed out areas of this cemetery map to the left. There are now over four thousand memorials listed in Find A Grave for Memorial Hill Cemetery.

Here is a reverse timeline I put together after the fact. By "documenting it" I mean that for every grave marker found, I created a memorial on Find A Grave and uploaded a photograph or someone else has done so.

5 Oct 2010 - It is much much easier to upload the photos if the memorials are already created. I photographed the "North Entrance Garden" section and the "Vet II (undeveloped)" section today and uploaded the photos. Apparently, I have already photographed the NE corner of the "Field of Honor Veterans Garden" section but not the SE corner.

15 Sep 2010 - I found a list burials of Memorial Hill Cemetery at the Austin Genealogical Society. I asked permission to use his list. He gave me permission and I uploaded them to Find A Grave. Today's count in the Memorial Hill Cemetery is 5,629 memorials.

4 Sep 2010 - I was getting help before, but all of us are burned out now. Today I uploaded the last of the photos I had of the "Founders Haven" section. I still have the rest of the "Field of Honor Veterans Garden" section and the "Garden of Roses" section to photograph. Then there is the "North Entrance Garden" section, and the "Garden of the Good Shepherd" section. Finally, there is the "Garden of Devotion (undeveloped)" section, the "Vet II (undeveloped)" section and two "future" sections to photograph, if there are any grave markers in those sections. Today's count in the Memorial Hill Cemetery is 4,136 memorials.

3 Nov 2009 - I photographed the rest of of the "Founders Haven" section today.

19 Sep 2009 - Someone else contacted me about working on this cemetery. She took photographs of the rest of the names in the Mausoleum, created the Memorials in Find A Grave, and uploaded her photos, so it is documented.

14 Sep 2009 - I photographed the western part of the "Founders Haven" section today. I uploaded the photographs and notified my transcribing partner.

Sep 2009 - Another Find A Grave contributor contacted me about helping to document this cemetery. I explained that the eastern half of the "Field of Honor Veterans Garden" section still needs to be documented as well as the rest of the Mausoleum. In fact, I told her, better photographs than mine could be taken of the names inside the Mausoleum. As for me, I think I will start on the "Founders Haven" section next.

Aug 2009 - Too hot to photograph!

May through Jul 2009 - I got tired of transcribing photos, so I solicited help from Find A Grave contributors. I found a great transcriber who researches the names. Frequently she gets full names with maiden names, full dates and places of birth and death. She creates the memorials and I upload my photographs. Finished documenting the western half of the "Field of Honor Veterans Garden" section.

Apr 2009 - I continued on the "Field of Honor Veterans Garden" section and finished photographing the western half of the section.

Mar 2009 - I started on the "Garden of Roses" section and finished documenting it. Started on the Mausoleum in "Field of Honor Veterans Garden" section and finished documenting it. Continued with documenting the "Field of Honor Veterans Garden" section.

Feb 2009 - I started on the "South Entrance Garden" section and finished documenting it. Continued photographing parts of the Mausoleum and "Field of Honor Veterans Garden" section.

Jan 2009 - I started with the "Fountain of Life" section and finished documenting it.
